Shigeyoshi Koyama

Shigeyoshi Koyama, born in Osaka in 1940, is a self-taught Japanese artist who has lived in Cadaqués since 1970. His career merges Eastern artistic tradition with the light and essence of the Mediterranean, creating a unique visual language that has made him an emblematic figure in the artistic colony of this town in the Empordà.

Determined to become a painter, Koyama moved to Tokyo in his early years and, in 1970, embarked on a journey that would change his life: he traveled the Trans-Siberian Railway to Moscow, flew to Paris, and finally arrived in Catalonia, first settling in Vilajuïga and then in Cadaqués. After a brief return to Japan to formalize a contract with the Kabutoya Gallery, he returned permanently to Cadaqués, where he started his family and consolidated his artistic career.

In 1977, he signed a contract with architect Lanfranco Bombelli to exhibit at the historic Galería Cadaqués, a collaboration that later continued with Sofía van Schendel and Patrick Donkem. His work is produced both on canvas and on paper, a material he prepares by hand, crumpling it to obtain unique textures that enrich the composition.

His paintings frequently depict Mediterranean landscapes, especially of Cadaqués, as well as corners of other areas of Spain and southern Italy. His still lifes of fish and flowers are also highly valued, combining Eastern delicacy with Mediterranean chromatic strength.

Shigeyoshi Koyama has exhibited in various cities in Spain and his work is part of collections in the United States, France, England, Germany, and Japan, confirming his international projection and the timeless appeal of his painting.
