Albert Ràfols Casamada (Barcelona, 1923 – 2009) was a prominent Catalan painter, poet, and creator, whose career made him an essential figure in Spanish contemporary art. Although he began studying architecture, he soon abandoned it to fully dedicate himself to painting and visual arts, influenced by his family and artistic environment.

In 1950 he traveled to Paris on a scholarship, where he lived until 1954 with his wife, the painter Maria Girona i Benet. There he absorbed the post-war artistic currents that shaped his style, characterized by lyrical abstraction and a delicate use of color.

His graphic work holds a fundamental place in his production. Through engraving and lithography, Rafols Casamada explored the same poetic universe as in his painting, transferring to the print his intimate visual language full of suggestions. In these works, color and geometry dialogue with space in compositions of great subtlety, reflecting his profound artistic sensitivity.

Throughout his career he received important recognitions, such as the National Prize for Plastic Arts (1980), the Creu de Sant Jordi (1983), the Legion of Honour from the French Government (1991), and the National Prize for Visual Arts of Catalonia (2003). His prestige led him to be named honorary academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.

Today, the graphic work of Rafols Casamada is considered an essential part of his legacy, with editions that show his constant search for balance between form, color, and poetry.
