The Marvelous Everyday Life of Mónica Castanys

Everyday life as art

Mónica Castanys, born in Barcelona in 1973, is an artist who has captured the beauty of the everyday with a unique sensitivity. Raised in a family environment with artistic roots, she is the granddaughter of Valentí Castanys, a popular and renowned Catalan graphic humorist. From her grandfather, she inherited an extraordinary capacity for observation, which she has channeled exceptionally throughout her painting career. Trained at the Escola Superior de Disseny i Art La Llotja in Barcelona, Castanys graduated in 1993 in Pictorial Procedures. Since then, her artistic trajectory has been unstoppable, participating in numerous exhibitions in galleries throughout Spain and Europe. From 2004 onwards, she has dedicated herself entirely to pictorial creation, consolidating a personal style that merges urban life with personal introspection. Mònica Castanys Mónica Castanys's work is characterized by its ability to transform everyday scenes into something deeply reflective and aesthetically captivating. Her artistic focus centers on daily life, both in the private and public spheres, exploring the dynamics between both worlds. The scenes she captures range from intimate moments within the home to street scenes, where interaction with the environment and others becomes the protagonist. Through her interior paintings, a calm and tranquility is reflected that contrasts with the vitality and dynamism of the urban scenes she also portrays. In these, the city streets are the stage where social life unfolds, with its bustling moments and, at the same time, small oases of tranquility, such as café terraces or outdoor scenes. In Mónica Castanys's work, the female figure occupies a central place. Frequently, her characters are women captured in everyday moments, almost always depicted in profile or from behind, which grants them a certain emotional distance, as if they were unaware of the prominence they inevitably acquire in the scene. This approach allows the artist to create a space for reflection in which the female figures, although seemingly secondary, are the ones that provide balance and rhythm to her compositions. Light plays a fundamental role in Castanys's work, especially in outdoor scenes. Her urban paintings are imbued with a natural light that not only brings spaces to life but also generates contrasts that invite reflection. Outdoor terraces, sun-drenched streets, and interiors lit by the soft light of the afternoon are silent witnesses to daily life, and through them, the artist invites us to pause and observe the beauty of the simple.
